CUSTOMS REGULATIONS

HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS

The Shipper MUST be in the country when the goods arrive. Original passport is required.

Household good and Vehicles MUST be cleared separately.

Returning Residents out of Zambia for 2+ years and Zambian Diplomats: In order to get duty and tax free entry for returning residents they must have been out of the country a minimum of 2 years. The goods must be imported within 6 months of the return date. Failure to do so results in Duty and Taxes applying. New Items are subject to Import Duties and Taxes as well as VAT. ALL documents copies MUST be certified by the Zambian High Commission in the country of Origin or by a commissioner of Oath. (This includes the passport, contracts, letter of employment, etc.)

Documents required:

  • Copy of passport
  • A letter stating the reason for leaving the country of origin
  • A letter stating the reason for coming back to Zambia
  • Packing list in English (no abbreviations)
  • Valued Inventory list in English
  • Declaration of Value for Customs purposes
  • Individual TPIN (Tax Payer Identification number)

Foreign or Temporary residents: The goods must be imported within 6 months of the return date. Failure to do so results in Duty and Taxes applying.   • Certified copy of passport showing date of entry in Zambia
  • Certified copy of work permit (not temporary work permit)
  • A letter of employment or contract from employer
  • Packing list in English (no abbreviations)
  • Valued inventory list in English
  • Declaration of Value for Customs purposes
  • Individual TPIN (Tax Pater Identification number)

Diplomats: The shipper must be in Zambia prior to the arrival of his goods and he must first officially register at the Zambia Department of Foreign Affairs. Diplomatic shipments can ONLY be cleared in Lusaka. They must then be removed from Bond (RIB) from the border to Lusaka terminal.

Documents Required:

  • Copy of Diplomatic passport
  • Diplomatic clearance completed by the diplomatic representative and countersigned by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Zambia
  • Copy of inventory and value
  • Individual TPIN (Tax Payer Identification number)

MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)

Returning Nationals who have lived abroad for more than 2 years are allowed to import one motor vehicle duty and tax free provided the vehicle was registered in the shippers name in the country of Origin.

Temporary Foreign Residents are allowed to import one motor vehicle duty and tax free within the first 6 months of their arrival in Zambia (date of issue of the work permit), provided that the vehicle was registered in the shippers name in the country of Origin.

Foreign Diplomats may import 2 vehicles maximum duty and tax free.

Vehicles belonging to returning Zambian Diplomats can only be cleared in Lusaka.

Documents required for import:

  • Original certificate of registration and ownership
  • Purchase invoice or letter of sale in English
  • Valuation certificate
  • Police clearance certificate (Interpool)
  • Certified Copy of passport, showing date of departure and date of return.

PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS

Prohibited:

  • Unlawful drugs and narcotics
  • Pornography
  • Counterfeit Items
  • Cultural artifacts and other objects of cultural importance
  • Henna
  • Palm Trees and any byproducts
  • Explosive Materials

Alcohol and Spirits should be sent separately from personal effects shipment and are subject to 100% tax. Shipper is allowed to bring a maximum of: 200 Cigarettes, 50 Cigars, 100 Cigarillos, 500g of tobacco, 2.5L of Alcohol and 2.5L of Spirits. Firearms and ammunition can only be imported with authorization from the territorial administration. Computers and Electrical items are dutied 15-25% of invoice and 16% VAT. Endangered species and any products or parts thereof require authorization from CITES. Any hunting weapons require authorization from the Ministry of Interior.
