CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS
All shipper is required to be physically present at customs for the physical examination and interview.
Duties will be applicable if the client has lived for less than 2 years outside Zimbabwe. If the client has a work or residence permit and documentation in order then there will be no customs duties. No customs duties will be applicable if the shipper is a returning Zimbabwe resident and has lived outside Zimbabwe for 2 years or more and can prove it.
No imported goods may be sold, leased or otherwise disposed of for 24 months from their date of entry, unless customs duties are paid.
All personal effects and household goods must be imported within three months after the returning residents time of arrival or after the time the work or resident permit has been granted to an immigrant.
Limit to 5 liters of Alcohol are allowed to be imported.
Returning residents must present the following after an absence of MORE than 2 years:
- If the shipper is working, he/she must product letter of appointment from the company he/she was working for, contract of Employment, Termination of contract from the same company, pay slips from previous 2 years, tax returns for last 2 years (P60s if coming from UK), P45 if available
- If shipper was student- must provide transcript and/or certificate
- Must show passport with date of exit out of Zimbabwe and another page showing Accepted RR (Returning Resident) (If accepted as a returning resident that person will be exempt from paying taxes- but MUST import items within 90 days)
- Must show passport copy showing exit stamp and permit from previous country
- Valued inventory in English and USD
- Bank Statement from last 3-6 months
- The immigrants declaration – Form 170 for personal and household effects issued in Zimbabwe
- The Original Bill of Lading or Sea Way Bill or Express Release or ROAD manifest or AWB
- Freight invoice for sea shipment
- Inventory with serial numbers of electrical appliances
Returning residents must present the following after an absence of LESS than 2 years:
- Previous export documents
- (and same as above required)
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS
Citrus fruits, deciduous plants and seeds may not be imported unless an import license has been obtained in advance from the competent agricultural authorities and a Phytosanitary certificate is required.
Drugs, pornographic books, foodstuff, forged documents and counterfeit money are prohibited.
MOTOR VEHICLES (AUTOS AND MOTORBIKES)
For a returning resident absent for less then 2 years, vehicle is subject to duty in foreign currency based on full value.
Taxes on car will depend on age and engine capacity. Cars over 5 years old will have higher duties.
There are few restrictions on importation of vehicle, used an new cars are allowed as long as they were in physical existence and fully paid for by the diplomat or immigrant before the time of arrival in Zimbabwe. Only one vehicle per person 18 years and older, and the carrying capacity must be less then fifteen people including the driver.
For immigrants or residents absent for more then 2 years the following are required:
- Form 171 (MV) for motor vehicles= immigrants declaration
- Passport
- Residence Permit/Work Permit
- Original Vehicle Registration Book and all original docs (insurance, invoice etc.)
- If the car is being exported from and SADC country there should be a deregistration certificate SARPCCO and it should be valid (it expires after 90 days from the date of issue
